I’ll Fly Away I found my way back home I thought that you might say some more A penned note upon my door I took a pass I can’t ignore I’ll fly away through the hole that you have inside Left like a breeze through the door I found my way back home I cannot help you anymore I found my way back home How could I ever know for sure? Another note upon my door If I’ve been gone then what’s it for? I’ll fly away I’ll fly away through the hole that you have inside Left like a breeze through the door I found my way back home I cannot help you anymore You’ve got something to say But you can’t have your way Drag it on with sorrow Even if I would die I’m not the only one We won’t talk tomorrow I found my way back home I thought that you would say some more ten notes upon my door It’s better not to be a bore

Apocalypse, Please Be True Sat back waiting for the world to end It was on TV, so I knew that it would happen Haven’t paid my bills, haven’t paid my rent What’s the point? You don’t pay bills in heaven I was gonna tell my girlfriend that we’re through But we’re gonna turn to vapor, which is great, now I don’t have to Dr.Phil said we’ll soon be gone And that guy is never wrong Not again. No fires. No floods. No acid rain. What will we do? Apocalypse, please be true. I was gonna go to college, gonna get some skills What’s the point? Only finish one semester I would be an engineer, build a brave new world but the floods will come and you can’t build underwater We could take a sky rocket into space It’s a million a ticket; I don’t have a penny The news said we’ll soon be gone I know the news is never wrong Not again. No fires. No floods. No acid rain. What will we do? Apocalypse, please be true. Sat back waiting for the world to end It was on TV, so I knew that it would happen Haven’t paid my bills, haven’t paid my rent What’s the point? We don’t pay bills in heaven Sold all my possessions, cashed ‘em in Living like a rock star, maxing out my credit Now I’m ready for the world to end I know, they won’t be wrong again Not again. No fires. No floods. No acid rain. What will we do? Apocalypse, please be true. Not again. No fires. No floods. No acid rain. What will we do? Apocalypse, please be true.

Some Girls 03:18
Some Girls Some girls need a harpoon to land the man they’re on Some girls need a spittoon to drain the man they’ve drowned Some girls need a tattoo to show the ones they care Some girls need some bamboo patterns on their underwear I for one have always like them just the way they came I have always feigned attention when the conversation’s lame Some girls need electrified friendly hands at nights Some girls need to change their breath after a Spaniard bullfight If you’ve ever seen me down it all in one big gulp Then you know you’re chapter after chapter New York Pulp La la la la la la la la la la la la It’s a flame out Some girls need a harpoon to land the man they’re on Some girls need a spittoon to drain the man they’ve drowned Some girls wanna know just why I eat down all my beans After all it’s some girls who can justify their means La la la la la la la la la la la la It’s a flame out

Willowman 03:01
Willowman Why are the lonely involved? It’s part of the scheme. It’s just a stupid machine. Why do the homely evolve? It’s sacrificial indeed. I think you know what I mean. Time says the prices, they are fair. But weren’t you even aware? I thought I’d chance on a dare. I grabbed a handful to share. Those stupid people, I swear. How did the comely devolve? And they fell on their own. It’s our fault I’m told. Time says the prices, they are fair. But weren’t you even aware? I thought I’d chance on a dare. I grabbed a handful to share. Those stupid people, I swear. Unpin that heart, honestly. It’s high time to breath. It’s just a stupid machine.

Yellow Magazine Standing on the corner with a Yellow Magazine. Low-cut pants and sugar ants remind me where I been. You wonder why, you wonder what is in my magazine. Well, I can’t tell you. I only want to make a difference you know. Standing on the corner with a Yellow Magazine. High-rise towers and orchid flowers show me where I been. You wonder why, you wonder what is in my magazine. Well, I can’t tell you. I only want to make a difference you know. If I could tell you stories. Won’t hear my stories? If you would buy my stories… If you take from me Yellow Magazine, you won’t know the difference when you’re gone.

Silence Me 03:35
Silence Me From a line of fragile people who show their weakness every day. Some may fear a church’s steeple I can never fear that way. Silence me, silence me Over me. Under me. Cover me. Bury me. Silence me, silence me. Why would you listen to me? Over me. Under me. Stop me before I can change your mind. The slightest fear shuts down my mind, dear. What does your agenda hold? A supporting role, that’s not my part, dear. But you knew that truth be told. And every day, I look for crisis. I know you find that hard to bear. An idle prayer never suffices. I need to know, do you care?

Love Beyond Your Means I know when you’re asleep, you have a fabulous dream but when you are awake, what do you dream? I dream that I’m a river and a newspaper too. I dream I walk my big, big feet right over next to you. Inside us is light, turn it off with a switch so your day becomes the night, and the dream is the stitch that sews it all together in a tapestry of souls working all together, looking forward to growing old. I dream that I’m a tire, rolling up the hill and if I have a blowout, I will dream of you still. I dream that I’m a river and a newspaper too. I dream I walk my big, big feet right over next to you. Inside us is light, turn it off with a switch so your day becomes the night, and the dream is the stitch that sews it all together in a tapestry of souls working all together, looking forward to growing old. Society won’t allow you to love beyond your means Society won’t allow you to live beyond your means Take a look in the mirror Love beyond your means Take a look in the mirror Don’t live beyond your means We fight and we ball and we thrash and we crawl we hide and we dream and we lie in between

about

Description:

A menu of UK Punk and US Alternative served with an infusion of 70s Rock, reduction of 80s New Wave and a drizzle of Andrews Sisters compote, garnished with melodica, bagpipes and etherial piano, with Pink Floyd, David Bowie, Fiona Apple and REM seasoning

Liner Notes:

From hundreds of miles away, five songwriters converge once a year in Kittery, ME to achieve one goal; an album of music. With minimal pre-written material, they assemble each year knowing they will hash-out in the studio what will become a complete and coherent collection of songs. The core of Shutterwax is (in alphabetic order); Jeffrey Brayne, Jessica Brayne, Harvey Brice, Frank Diorio and Mark Rufino. All songwriters in their own right, the united vision of Shutterwax is pure collaboration; to take skeletons and give them flesh, blood and finally life. A beautiful Frankenstein so to speak. Or maybe an ugly one. Either way, the songs are all truly Shutterwax, unique and fun.

What can you expect to hear from Shutterwax? Just about anything really. They do not limit themselves in any capacity, so you may hear Rock, Folk, Dance, Country, R&B, Surf, etc. on any given Shutterwax album.

With very limited time, usually five days at best, they make a list of all the ideas they’ve had over the past year, quickly listen and evaluate each ‘demo’ or song-snippet for viability, then quickly get to work in a flurry of creativity, writing lyrics, verses, bridges and choruses in whatever style is most appropriate for each song. Every member of Shutterwax brings a very unique toolkit with them as each has years and years of experience playing nearly every genre of popular music. If the song is not fun or creative, it is quickly abandoned in favor of another idea.

The end product is almost always interesting and certainly unique; a complete song is the goal and it’s performed the best way Shutterwax can with the constraints of a two-to-three hour limit on each song. This means two-to-three hours from inception there is a demo then complete basic tracking. Jeff, Mark and Frank are usually working out the music while Harvey and Jessica are writing lyrics, but all have input on all aspects of each song for a perfect balance of influence and sensibility.

Some quick descriptions of a few of the songs you will hear on Dig Me a Well:

"Dig Me a Well" began as a dance track that Mark had written then with a few decisive lyrics by Harvey and Jessica, the song morphed into a Cow Punk anthem complete with Andrews Sister's-type harmonies.

“I’ll Fly Away” started out as a folk-style, smooth, melodic song about an obsessive boy who leaves note after note on his girlfriend’s door in hopes she will soften and agree to let him back in her life. A few minutes on the Shutterwax table and the hard-edged bridge and fundamental support shook away the exterior tolerance and reveals the emotional upheaval that she feels when her point is not understood.

“Apocalypse, Please Be True” showcases Harvey’s wit supported with a beautiful, bouncy melody complete with a George Winston-esque piano solo. Having a sentiment everyone can relate to in the face of a changing world, it proclaims; life can be daunting. Waiting for things to happen for you can bring about your own apocalypse.

"Some Girls" rings eerily with a frenetic minor-key riff and sardonic lyrics about the extreme narcissism found on social networks. The song's summary is a nod to Dick Dale and The Clash with a sinister surf riff over dark and powerful chords.

“Love Beyond Your Means” has a duplicitous dynamic of starting with a saccharine-sweet Hawaiian ukulele-driven melody sure to make the most hardened sentiments soften then quickly turn sour in the realization of unrealistic expectations in love.

We believe there is something for everyone in this collection and truly hope you enjoy your listening experience. We certainly enjoyed creating these. Happy listening! - Shutterwax
